An image with a transparent background stores the product with a transparency mask (alpha channel) instead of a solid background. It can then be placed on any colour or design, which is useful for marketing layouts and configurators.

How PhotoRobot uses it

PhotoRobot Controls can set the background to transparent in one click. Because JPEG does not support transparency, transparent images are exported as PNG or WebP; when a transparent image is exported as JPG, a background colour can be chosen.

  • Alpha channel: An extra image channel that stores the transparency of every pixel.
  • PNG: A lossless image format that supports transparency; larger files than JPEG.
  • WebP: Google's web image format with efficient lossy and lossless compression and transparency.
  • Background removal: Separating the product from its background so it can be placed on pure white or transparency.
  • White background: A background of pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255), standard for e-commerce product images.
